Keeper of Dragons The Elven Alliance Keeper of Dragons Book 2 eBook JA Culican

I was a little disappointed in this book, because I was wanting so much more. The story is so good, the characters are so good, I was very eager to read and find out what happens in this second installment of The Keeper of Dragons.

In this book, Prince Colton - Cole - is taken to the Elves for help in controlling the tilium that he's taken from the farros. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes baggage between the dragons and the elves due to the way the dragons behaved after their prince was killed by the farros two hundred years ago. The dragons abandoned the treaty of all true beings and hid on their island, nursing their wounds. They upheld their duty of protecting humans with renewed vigor and started the tradition of sending new babes to live with humans until they are 18. But the dragons ignored other magical creatures, and as a result, those other beings suffered tremendous losses. The elves lost their King and Queen - Prince Gaber and Princess Clara's parents. There is a bitterness there that is so understandable and heartbreaking.

From the first book, we see dragons as fierce protectors, and it is hard to see that they so neglected their duties to other magical beings. It was somewhat irreconcilable to me to see Jericho, especially, not express more shame at the dragons' behavior. As Prince Colton expresses vehemently at one point, the true beings are all supposed to be working together, but they are divided because of this rift caused by the dragons. It just didn't make sense to me, it didn't fit with the characterization of dragons that had been made up to this point. Fierce protectors, yes. Arrogant, sure. I can understand how the dragons would have circled their wagons and hidden in their hurt after their Prince was killed. Absolutely. But that was 200 years past, and a lot has been done and changed since then.

My issue, I think, centralized on Jericho. He was so affected by the loss of the Dragon Prince and how their people didn't protect him. How could he, then, stand by and allow his entire people to not protect other true beings? And when he stands face-to-face with the consequences of the dragons' failure to act - namely an orphaned Prince Gaber and Princess Clara - he is arrogant and unapologetic. That doesn't seem to fit quite right to me. Maybe if it had been expounded upon? Maybe some explanation of his internal conflict between accepting responsibility and defending his people? I'm not sure. I think it could have been done, though, and it would have made the story richer and more cohesive.

Anther thing I struggled with in this book is the lack of action. There was a whole lot of leading up to things, but nothing actually happened in this entire story. The closest we came was when Cole had his one training session with Gaber and it looked like he had lost complete control of himself and caused irreparable harm. But then the fates intervene and a dire warning is given to the elves and dragons present. So that turns out to be a good thing.

At the very end of the book, we start to see the confrontation between the true beings and the fallen beings. There is speculation as to what makes Eldrick - the fallen elf Prince - so confident that he actually wants all of the true beings to attack him at once. But then we don't actually have a confrontation. The two sides come all the way up to each other, and then Eldrick disappears, and so do all of the true elves back in their "swamp." And then the book ENDS. What?!?!?

I felt over and over that Cole should be doing something more. He has been driven by instinct, so why doesn't he act when he has an inclination to? During the training incident with Gaber, he starts to walk forward to do something to help, and then he stops. When Eva is suspended, unconscious, before him, he faces Tana and stops again. He just doesn't show much attempt to move forward in the entire book, and that was so frustrating to read. On the one hand, I appreciate this because it balances the ridiculously high expectations that everybody else seems to have of him, and it sets the stage for him to do something truly exceptional and magnificent in a future book. I definitely want to see that!! But on the other hand, it was really frustrating and felt very teasing and incongruous. For example, Cole steps up to all of the elves, fairies, and trolls present and barks at them that they are supposed to be fighting together. I was cheering so loud in my head, "Yes! Go, Cole!" But then the very next confrontation he has, he literally lies in the mud and gives up. What??

What I kept missing was more detail, more explanation of inner thoughts and feelings on the parts of all the characters.

Okay, and one final complaint. This is the second book in a row where Eva is barely present. In this one, she has a small bit part in the beginning where she is used as a ploy to trick Cole into using his tilium, and then gets to dance with him at a party later that night. The entire rest of the book she is kidnapped and all but unconscious. At the very end, when she reappears in the story, she has no memory of whatever happened. Only Cole ever refers to her by name. Everybody else - dragons, elves, fairies, and trolls alike - refer to her only by Golden Dragon, or Keeper of Dragons. She is seen as necessary to Cole for being the other half of the Keeper of Dragons, and his source of strength and complementary power. Even in her relationship with Cairo, she is seen only as HIS other half - the complement to what he already was for over 100 years before she was born. Eva is an incredible, powerful, intelligent, awesome woman, and yet she is treated as nothing more than an object by everybody but Cole, and it is so frustrating. I want to see more of Eva, and I want to see her more fully realized and appreciated. I really hope that happens in the third book!

Quite frankly, even with all the complaints that I have, the story is so good that I know I will keep reading it. There are so many positives to the writing, to the characters, to the story, but they were all discussed in my review of the first book so I haven't mentioned them here. But they're there! I'm definitely looking forward to the third book.

Keeper of Dragons The Elven Alliance Keeper of Dragons Book 2 eBook JA Culican Reviews

Cole and Eva, also known as "Keeper of the Dragons ", are trying to save their friends as well as themselves from the fallen. It's a war they're unprepared for but the responsibility has fallen to them. Can they be victorious?
Not only is Cole trying to figure out what is happening to his body and his powers, but now he has another fight on his hands, and he knows he needs more training to be the Keeper everyone says he's fated to be. The ending leaves you anxious, so you must read on! I sure will!
The story has promise but the writing is in urgent need of an editor. I was so surprised to read that the author is a teacher. Some examples of the lack of writing skill include ending sentences with question marks, improper tense, and simply using the wrong word.
This is a great series for all ages. It contains all the magical being you will love. You of course have our pair of special dragons plugs good fairies ,elf's,trolls and your evil bad guys. Interesting through out the entire book
The Elven Alliance is book 2 to the Prince Returns. Cole and Eva are the Keeper of Dragons, the protectors who can save all true beings from a time of fear.  Cole is trying to control his dragon and fairy magic. While trying to learn control he turns to the elves for help. The Keeper of Dragons now have to face King Eldrick of the eldens, the fallen elves. Join Cole and Eva on their journey. Can't wait to read book 3.
I'm angry!!! I didn't know there was going to a cliff hanger, so, now I need to know when the next book will be available for purchase and what the title will be. I liked this book and it's characters. Will the missing be found? What is going to happen next?
Farros, elden, elves, trolls, along with great action and adventure, and even romance? Oh my has this book held up to the strong standard set in book 1!

Only one considerable problem there's a freaking cliffhanger! JA Culican that's awfully unfair to spring in a reader without warning (like, you know, in the blurb). As for anyone reading this review, though, you can pretty much avoid it by stopping at the 97% mark. I wish I'd known. I still would've bought the book because book 1 was too good not to try book 2, but I might have held in to it until book 3 comes along (please, please, JA Culican, hurry up with book 3) ... unless someone else had advised to stop at 97%, then I would've done just that as it's worth doing - this book was just gooood and really fun.

Still recommended strongly. Subtract 1 (not 2) stars if you simply can't stand cliffhangers of any sort. Possibly add a star if they just don't matter to you.
